Exports of recovered scrap paper from the U.S. 2015-2023
In 2023, exports of recovered waste and scrap paper from the United States declined by approximately 14 percent year-over-year, to less than 13 million tons. This was the lowest figure recorded in well over a decade. Scrap exports from the U.S. dropped considerably in 2019, after China - the main destination for exports at the time - imposed a series of restrictions on waste imports. India is now the leading destination for U.S. paper scrap exports.
